About this training

Sign up for a day of training with Scope’s Accessibility Specialist, Elisabeth Ward.

Learn how to create accessible content from somebody who does it every day.

Our content accessibility training gives you an introduction to disability from lived experience. We want you to understand the barriers disabled people encounter every day. It’s important to understand why accessibility is important.

This means our training goes beyond Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1). We’re not here to teach you the minimum legal standards for accessibility. Instead, we focus on creating a culture of inclusion through accessibility. This is for your colleagues and your customers.

Our training is open to anyone who wants to upskill or improve their accessibility knowledge. You don’t need to have accessibility experience to join.

We’re based in the UK and our training times are BST or GMT.

What you will learn:

We want to make accessibility easy to apply to your day-to-day work. We’ll give you simple best practices you can understand and use.

Our training covers:

  • why accessibility is important and the benefits
  • the social model of disability
  • the 4 core principles of accessibility
  • why researching and testing with disabled people is important
  • plain English and writing accessible content
  • accessible headings and structure
  • accessible colours, fonts, and links
  • PDF, image, graph, and video accessibility

The day will be a mix of teaching, discussions, and exercises.

By the end you will be able to:

  • talk about why accessibility is important in your work
  • start applying best practices
  • make your work more accessible
  • use reference materials and the accessibility community to continue learning

Format and training materials

This is a virtual event, hosted on Microsoft Teams. We use a mix of presenting, screen sharing and breakout rooms for exercises.

Make sure you have access to Teams by app or web browser before the training begins. We will send you a workbook and a guide to using Teams closer to the time. We can also arrange a test session with you beforehand to make sure it’s all working.

You don’t need to read these before the session, but you may find them useful. After the training, we’ll send you an online accessibility toolkit.

This has links to further guidance on:

  • all topics covered in the training
  • getting started with accessibility in your organisation
  • accessibility events, forums, meet-ups and blogs

We look forward to seeing you.
