Social model training by Scope

Multiple dates

About this training

The social model of disability is a way of viewing the world, developed by disabled people. It says people are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or condition.

You’ll learn more about the model in a fun, 2.5 hour workshop. The session is run by Scope’s experts:

  • Elisabeth Ward, Accessibility Specialist
  • Sally Hooper, Inclusive Workplace Specialist
  • Emma Vogelmann, Policy Advisor

What you will learn:

Social model training helps colleagues understand the social model for disability.

  • Introduction to the social model and why Scope supports the social model
  • A brief look at disability rights and legislation
  • Understanding both the medical model and the social model of disability
  • Personal stories about the social model changing our way of thinking
  • Examples of physical, attitudinal and online barriers
  • The challenges faced by disabled people when engaging with businesses
  • Inclusive language and interacting with disabled people

By the end you will be able to:

  • Understand the parts of the Equalities Act that are important to disability equality
  • Recognise the built, digital and societal barriers that disabled people experience
  • Understand reasonable adjustments
  • Feel more confident to work with, manage, and meet the needs of disabled colleagues and customers
